American Microchemical Society Benedetti Pichler Award

Vincent T. Remcho is Oregon State University’s Patricia Valian Reser Faculty Scholar and Honors College Eminent Professor, with appointments in the Department of Chemistry and the Materials Science program. He holds adjunct appointments in Biochemistry & Biophysics and Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering. His research group works at the interface of science and engineering to design, build and optimize microscale analytical instruments and chemical reactors. These systems are applied in biochemical, environmental, and nanomanufacturing problem solving.

The Remcho group has developed innovative technologies in diverse areas, including pioneering work on transport processes in porous fluidic systems, the development of microfluidic devices for clinical analysis, the design of sorbents for separations, the detection of adulterated pharmaceuticals, and the production of microscale systems for synthesis and analysis of nanomaterials. Remcho’s students have gone on to successful roles in academe, industry, and national laboratories. His work has been funded by NSF, NIH, US DoE, the US Air Force Research Laboratory, US Army Research Laboratory, Office of Naval Research, and by private foundations including the W.M. Keck Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust.

Remcho is an elected Fellow of AAAS (2014), was recognized as Oregon Scientist of the Year (2015), is the recipient of a Keck Foundation Science and Engineering Program Award and an NSF CAREER Award, received the Milton Harris Award for Research Excellence (2010), and is a College of Arts and Sciences Teaching Award recipient. He has published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed chemistry, physics, environmental science, material science, and chemical engineering journals including PLoS One, the Journal of Physical ChemistryAnalytical ChemistryTalantaAnalytical MethodsChemistry of MaterialsClinica Chimica Acta, and the Journal of Chemical Education. Remcho holds 6 patents with 4 additional patents pending, and is a co-inventor on the HP D300 digital dispense system, which has accelerated the drug discovery process using a unique microfluidic approach. He co-founded three startup companies, all of which leveraged OSU intellectual property.


Remcho has served in multiple leadership roles, including Associate Dean for Research and interim Dean in the OSU College of Science, leading successful efforts to build out a new Electron Microscopy facility, add multiple new electron and ion beam instruments, add to the tenure track faculty ranks, and establish new, competitive norms for faculty startups. He led the teams that established a new Women in Science program, and built a new Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences in Science (SURE Science) program. He served as Lead for OSU’s Energy Research Partnership effort. He co-chaired the Microscale Separations and Bioanalysis Conference in 2019 (MSB2019), and serves on the Board of the Society for Microscale Separations and Bioanalysis. He is an editorial board member for Nanomaterials, and a past board member for both Talanta and Electrophoresis.

Remcho received his B.S. (Biochemistry, 1989) and Ph.D. (Chemistry, 1992) from Virginia Tech, where he worked with Harold M. McNair. He was a DOE/AWU-NW postdoctoral fellow at the University of Utah and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory working with J. Calvin Giddings and Nathan E. Ballou.
