Tolkien in <i>The Lord of the Rings<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Welcome to the 55<sup>th<\/sup> Eastern Analytical Symposium and Exposition (EAS).\u00a0 Our theme this year, \u201cAnalytical Chemistry Opens Doors,\u201d was chosen as I mused on the varied career paths that the Governing Board members have taken.\u00a0 We all have analytical chemistry backgrounds but have ended up in everything from academic researchers to pharmaceutical executives.\u00a0 From crime solvers to troubleshooters.\u00a0 \u00a0From the lab bench to the C-suite.\u00a0 Like Frodo, we walked through the door that our analytical chemistry backgrounds had opened for us.\u00a0 And I\u2019d bet that many of you reading this have followed even <i>more<\/i> interesting roads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom<\/strong>.\u201d \u2013 George Washington Carver<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But it\u2019s not just doors to interesting careers that analytical chemistry opens.\u00a0 More importantly, it opens doors to solutions to some of society\u2019s knottiest problems. \u00a0Problems like how to ensure the authenticity of consumer products (Monday a.m.).\u00a0 Like how to preserve our cultural art heritage (Tuesday and Wednesday).\u00a0\u00a0 Like how to provide defense and security (Tuesday p.m.).\u00a0 \u00a0I encourage you to attend these oral sessions or any of the scores of interesting topics available in our technical program \u00a0\u00a0over the next three days.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A highlight of the 55<sup>th<\/sup> EAS will certainly be the Plenary Session to be held 4:30 p.m. Monday in the Doubletree Hotel Ballroom.\u00a0 We will have the honor and privilege of hearing from former US Congressman and current Chief Executive Officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Rush Holt.\u00a0 All are welcome.\u00a0 You won\u2019t want to miss this event!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also not to be missed is our Exposition.\u00a0 Our most loyal supporters are back (although some with new merged names).\u00a0 And we welcome a bunch of new exhibitors.\u00a0 You\u2019ll want to set aside some time to walk the aisles.\u00a0 There\u2019s always something new and interesting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I extend my congratulations to all of the EAS award winners.\u00a0 These scientists are truly inspiring.\u00a0 I am especially inspired by the undergraduate and graduate student award winners.\u00a0 These young scientists are the future of analytical chemistry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And, finally, some news.\u00a0 It has been an honor to preside over the 55<sup>th<\/sup> EAS.\u00a0 This year has been bittersweet, as it is our last year here in Somerset.\u00a0 Yes, next year we are moving to our new home at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihg.com\/crowneplaza\/hotels\/us\/en\/plainsboro\/ttnpl\/hoteldetail\">Crowne Plaza Princeton &#8211; \u200bConference Center<\/a><\/strong> in nearby Plainsboro, NJ.\u00a0 As we are saddened to say goodbye to all of our friends at the GSEC, the Holiday Inn, and the Doubletree, we are also excited about the move.\u00a0 The Crowne Plaza will allow us to finally hold all of our events (Short Courses, Technical Program, and Exposition) under one roof.\u00a0 This promises that the 56<sup>th<\/sup> EAS will be even better than the 55<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy this week and keep on opening those doors.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em; text-align: justify;\">Daryl Cobranchi\u00a0<br class=\"none\" \/><\/span>2016 EAS President<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door.
