{"id":5091,"date":"2018-01-07T14:54:54","date_gmt":"2018-01-07T19:54:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/easinc.org\/wordpress\/?p=5091"},"modified":"2020-02-12T14:39:46","modified_gmt":"2020-02-12T19:39:46","slug":"eas-award-outstanding-achievements-vibrational-spectroscopy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eas.org\/2024\/eas-award-outstanding-achievements-vibrational-spectroscopy\/","title":{"rendered":"2019 EAS Award for Outstanding Achievements in Chemometrics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-5875\" src=\"https:\/\/eas.org\/2024\/2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Harrington-photo-Chemom-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eas.org\/2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Harrington-photo-Chemom-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/eas.org\/2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Harrington-photo-Chemom-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><strong>Professor Peter de Boves Harrington<\/strong> graduated from Randolph-Macon College in 1980 with a Baccalaureate of Science in Chemistry.\u00a0 After which, he worked as flavor chemist for Nabisco from 1980-1982.\u00a0 He has always maintained his interest in the analysis of foods and beverages.\u00a0 At Nabisco he had two mentors, Bill Softly who directed Pete towards chemometrics and Lucy Gursky who encouraged Pete to pursue a PhD, which he did when the research center moved from Wilton, CT to Fairlawn, NJ.\u00a0 In 1988, Pete graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.\u00a0 His PhD dissertation is titled Applications of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence to Some Problems in Analytical Chemistry under the guidance of Tom Isenhour.\u00a0 Tom was also Bruce Kowalski\u2019s PhD mentor, so Pete and Bruce are academic brothers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From 1987-1989, Pete created the DOS-based software platforms Resolve and Presager for identifying bacteria from their pyrolysis-mass spectra while working for Kent Voorhees at the Colorado School of Mines.\u00a0 Pete joined the faculty of Ohio University in 1989 as an Assistant Professor.\u00a0 In 1992, he founded the Center for Intelligent Chemical Instrumentation.\u00a0 He has over 200 publications and has made over 300 scientific presentations including many plenary and keynote speeches around the world.\u00a0 In 2016, Pete won the Ohio University College of Arts &amp; Sciences Outstanding Faculty Research Award and the 2019 Eastern Analytical Symposium Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemometrics (the reason that you are reading this biography.\u00a0 Pete is the Director of the Ohio University Center for Intelligent Chemical Instrumentation and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the North American Academy of Sciences.\u00a0 Currently, Pete\u2019s research focuses on the development and coupling of artificial intelligence to chemotyping by spectrometric measurements of botanical medicines and foods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Peter de Boves Harrington graduated from Randolph-Macon College in 1980 with a Baccalaureate of Science in Chemistry.\u00a0 After which, he worked as [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5091","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-info"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/eas.org\/2024\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5091"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/eas.org\/2024\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/eas.org\/2024\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/eas.org\/2024\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/eas.org\/2024\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5091"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/eas.org\/2024\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5091\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":6450,"href":"https:\/\/eas.org\/2024\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5091\/revisions\/6450"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/eas.org\/2024\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5091"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/eas.org\/2024\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5091"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/eas.org\/2024\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5091"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
