Abstract: Throughout history, data sets, painstakingly collected and aggregated, have enabled transformative scientific breakthroughs. From early examples that laid the foundation for scientific empiricism to more recent collections that have catalyzed precision medicine, high-quality data sets based on accurate measurements have been fundamental to improving society through science. In this current era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), when analytical instruments exceed the limits of the naked eye and calculations detect patterns imperceptible to the human mind, science increasingly relies on accurate measurement and high-quality data. And yet, accuracy and quality, while necessary, are not sufficient. AI ready data for biomedical research require computability, sustainability, ethical standards, provenance, and explainability. To that end, the Common Fund of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) serves as an innovation hub to transform emerging technologies into established methods for advancing health sciences. From single-cell sequencing to the spatio-temporal architecture of the nucleome, the Common Fund has funded the advancement of next-generation technologies for the age of genomic medicine. Beyond technology development, the Common Fund also funds projects to catalyze research through data. Bridge2AI aims to define AI-ready data, and the Common Fund Data Ecosystem seeks to integrate data across Common Fund programs and beyond through consistently high quality, common standards, and user-friendly data infrastructure. With strategic resource allocation from funders such as the NIH Common Fund and continued care toward measurement and data quality by unsung heroes from labs across the country, the future of health science holds tremendous promise. 

Bio: Dr. Christopher Kinsinger is the Assistant Director for Catalytic Data Resources in the Office of Strategic Coordination of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In this role, he leads data strategy and AI implementation for the research programs of the NIH Common Fund. Some of the programs in his portfolio include: Bridge2AI, Precision Medicine with Imaging and AI (PRIMED-AI), the Common Fund Data Ecosystem, the Gabriella Miller Kids First program for genomic sequencing of pediatric disease, and the Human Biomolecular Atlas Program.

Prior to joining the Common Fund, Chris established a proteogenomic characterization pipeline for the National Cancer Institute. The CPTAC program provided the first large-scale data sets of human tumor samples characterized by whole-exome sequencing, RNA sequencing, and mass-spectrometry-based proteomics.

Chris holds a PhD in computational chemistry from the University of Minnesota. His passion is to develop and execute research programs that bring together disparate fields of health science.
