EAS’s Outreach Program offers seminars essentially for high school teachers and students during the November meeting. Each seminar has outstanding presenters from academia and/or industry. The goal of each seminar is to demonstrate the advantages of a career in chemistry. The 2026 student seminar registration is free for middle & high school students with their teachers; seminars are included in the full-time college student registration fee of $50. Students are encouraged to visit the Exposition after the seminar.

‘Pill Coating – chemical engineering challenge’ (preferably 3 to 4 students per group). Understand the importance of enteric coating pills & tablets in order to maintain stability of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient. Bonus activity will include handheld spectrometer demo and discussion of counterfeit pharmaceuticals.
After Ground Zero: Science, Resolve and the
Unprecedented Quest to Identify the Missing

The terrorist attack on the World Trade Center was an immeasurable tragedy that left in its wake one of the most complex mass fatality investigations in history, resulting in a decades-long effort to identify the missing. Forensic DNA testing continues to this day, playing a central role in identifying the victims of this attack.
In this seminar, high school students will learn the challenges faced during the recovery and how this hindered making positive identifications. The presenters will focus on two types of analysis: comparison of ante mortem (prior to death) and post-mortem dental x-rays; and STR-based forensic DNA testing and kinship analysis, comparing the DNA profiles of victims to those of potential parents in order to make an identification. Students will practice each of these techniques in an interactive series of questions at the end of the session.
