COURSE DESCRIPTION
Effective lab management requires a wide range of leadership skills that most scientists haven’t had the opportunity to develop. A critical responsibility is effective people leadership and management. Providing an environment where staff can thrive, deliver, and grow is critical. Successful lab managers hire the right people, train them well, enable them to succeed, and provide the equipment they need to do innovative science. It is vital that they can interact with staff, communicate effectively, listen, and evaluate performance. This short course will cover people leadership, people management, performance management, effective advocating for the lab, and recruiting & hiring.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This course is designed for people who want to be or already are lab leaders. Anyone with an interest in improving their knowledge and skills around people leadership will benefit from the course. The examples will be from actual lab experiences, but the content can be valuable to anyone. The topics are taught in ways to benefit those just beginning their lab leadership journey, or those will years of experience. The outcome will be greater confidence in people leadership and management skills.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Scott Hanton
is the Editorial Director of Lab Manager. He earned a BS in chemistry from Michigan State University and a PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He spent 30 years as an industrial chemist and business leader with roles including research scientist, lab supervisor, laboratory operations manager, chief scientist, and general manager. Through these different roles, Scott developed expertise in technical innovation, people leadership, and business management. Currently, Scott manages and creates leadership and management content for Lab Manager, directs the Lab Manager Academy, and speaks in webinars and conferences on lab leadership. Scott is an active member of ACS, ASMS, and ALMA.
